The Christmas is just around the corner, so it’s time to pull out the dusty outdoor Christmas lawn decorations and think about what to do this season.

Having to figure out how to decorate your front yard this Christmas may be a daunting task, so I hope these tips will help you become creative and find your inspiration.

1) You should choose a theme for this year.

If you have too many unrelated Christmas yard decorations you need to choose just a few that are related and get rid of the rest. Decide if you want a modern approach or an old, traditional one. Don’t mix them up and by this I mean don’t put a nativity scene and a Santa next to each other, as they just don’t go well together.

Also, keep an eye on your neighbors, and find out what they are doing this year. You don’t want to blend with the other houses, so if your closest neighbors are trying to have their house seen from an airplane, then you should consider a more subtle, but amazing approach. Think about using only one color for your outdoor Christmas lights, so they don’t compete with the holiday madness surrounding you.

2) Determine the type of Christmas lights you need and want to use.

You can choose mini lights that are low voltage and come in all sort of colors. The prices vary for this type of lights, but you should be careful not to get the cheapest ones, as these will most likely burn very soon, and if one bulb burns, the whole string goes out.

The C7 and C9 lights are the traditional Christmas outdoor lights, and the advantage for using these lights is that they will stay lit if a bulb goes out, and their size makes them easily visible from distance.

  • Net lights – these are great for small trees and bushes in your front lawn
  • rope lights – a great alternative if you don’t want to deal with tangled strings of lights. They come in all colors possible, and are usually 18 feet long.

4) Make a plan and stick to it.

I recommend drawing a sketch of your yard and decide where you would like to place all your lawn decorations. Taking this strategy and planning the layout before you get to the actual decorating process will allow you to get the job done more quickly,

Remember that less is more, so don’t transform your front yard into a miniature theme park when placing the outdoor ornaments.

5) Get everything prepared and make sure you have all the tools and ornaments you need.

A good idea is to have a few extra bulbs to replace the ones that are burned, or will burn in the next month or two.

A wireless remote control for the power switch is a good investment, or even better, an outdoor timer for your lights will save you from going outside every morning and evening to turn the lights off and on.

Also have prepared a few extension cords, that are safe to use outdoor and some connectors, in case of one outdoor Christmas lighting string is not enough for particular are.

If you keep all of the above in mind and you don’t deviate from your plan and your Christmas decoration theme you should have no troubles putting the lawn ornaments up and create a beautiful decor for your house.
